Graduate Theme 1: Learner Participation
The first and most interesting theme is the concept of Learner Participation. The Training and Development program
introduced me to the study and practice of many theories and models. Understanding and employing adult learning
theory and the ADDIE model are significant events in my graduate education. During my exploration of this topic I was
responsible for the health and safety training for a major medical center. Once I under stood the foundations of sound
instructional design and analysis, I still found myself struggling with attendance
and participation. This led to the
research and investigation of ways to motivate learners to participate and
engage in training opportunities.
The theme represents personal and professional growth. It represents my own personal interest and direction in the field of T&D. I consider it to be just as important as instructional design or adult learning theory. Obtaining buy-in, increasing motivation and driving participation is an integral link between theory and practice. As practitioners of T&D we need to consider all the variables of good adult learning and sound instructional design. However to be productive and contributing employees in corporate America, we also need to drive meaningful participation. Corporations and business spend billions of dollars on T&D every year, T&D has a responsibility to ensure the ROI. T&D programs not only have to be attended but they need to be effective, we need the motivation and buy in from our learners.
I began researching the subject in earnest with a literature review. Reviewing the literature opened my eyes to the vast number of perspectives and variables. I continued my exploration with more in-depth evaluation to formulate a research proposal on the motivation to participate. Finally, my last entry for this theme is an interview with a research doing similar research.
