Learner Participation Theme
Learner Participation represents my own personal interest in the field of training and development. While working at a major academic medical center in the health and safety department, I found myself struggling with attendance for mandated training. My first significant effort in the research of this subject comes from EAC 582: Organization and Operation of T&D. We were directed to conduct a literature review. The assignment was intended to expose us to current research in the field of training and development and to critically discuss the research. This review of voluntary participation in development is the starting point of my own research focus instead of a seeded idea from a professor.
Learner Participation is being researched from numerous perspectives. There are many variables influencing the motivation. Motivation is influenced by organizational characteristics, individual characteristics and training program characteristics. There are also many variable influencing the actual participation in development activities. Motivation, attitudinal variables, managerial expectations and conscientiousness are just a few of the variables identified. One of the most important discoveries is the key distinction between the motivation to participate and actual participation. Through a comprehensive review of the literature, I was able to make a connection with systems theory. No individual researcher took a systemic view of the issue, but the research as a whole did. Poor participation cannot be addressed with any one variable, the system as a whole need to be analyzed.
The result of completing this assignment was more than just learning to conduct and critique current research. This assignment was integral in my professional development. I met the criteria in the assignment, but more importantly it was a turning point in my mindset. I was able to apply a skill from class to a problem I was experiencing in the workplace. After completing this assignment, the subject of learner participation became a theme applied in other assignments.
