The second assignment I selected to demonstrate my growth in the subject of learner participation comes from EAC 551: Research in Adult and Higher Education. The major course project was a research proposal. I chose to build on the work I started in the previous semester with a literature review. The literature review was a comprehensive exploration into the variables that influence the motivation to participate and participation in training and development activities. The research proposal narrowed in on the instructional design characteristics influencing the motivation to participate. This assignment represents a progression from simply reviewing relevant research to making my own contributions to the research.
Ineffective training programs lead to diminished motivation to participate. My intention with this proposal was to identify modifiable variables that influence learner motivation to participate. I expanded on previous research identifying training program characteristics that stimulate motivation. I focused my study on three variables. First, mandatory versus voluntary attendance, the literature was contradictory on this variable. Second, communication plans around implementation. Improved marketing may elevate motivation. Learners need to know the why and the WIIFM (what’s in it for me). Third is learner analysis. Accounting for learner needs assures that the right training is being delivered to the proper audience. Learner analysis is integral and can have a negative effect on your current and future training efforts.
This assignment represents a progression from reviewing research to conducting research. It is an important advancement in my mindset, to know that I can not only learn from others but conduct my own studies and contribute to the body of research on a subject.
