The third theme identified for this project is Instructional
Design. The themes of Distance/E-learning
and Learner Participation represent my growth and direction in the field of
training and development. The theme of instructional
design represents the foundation for that growth and direction. I began this graduate program because I needed
to know more to excel and advance in the field of training and
development. The theme was evident in
every class I completed.
There are many instructional design models and variations of models in the research. Most of them are some variation of the ever popular ADDIE model. ADDIE is, by far, the most widely used and recognized instructional design model. ADDIE stands for Analyze, Develop, Design, Implement and Evaluate. The steps are usually presented in a linear form, completing one step before the next is commenced. Through my coursework I realized that depending on the project the steps could be run concurrently or be run in a cyclic manner or sometimes certain steps could be abbreviated. The most important lesson I take away from the Instructional Design theme is to always begin with analysis and end with sound evaluation. The initial analysis of audience, stakeholders and content will guide the instructional design process.
To demonstrate my knowledge and growth I selected five assignments. First and second, I selected assignments based on interviews with professionals in the training and development field. The instructional designer interview was completed relatively early in my graduate work, the task analysis of trainers and developers was completed in my last semester. Third is a skill lesson plan based on Gagne’s model, the nine events of instruction to demonstrate the application of an instructional design model. Fourth, I am submitting a content report from a group project on instructional design. This is a particularly important work because it represents a real life example of Instructional Design. We completed this project and submitted it to a client. The client adopted the project and has incorporated it into their curriculum. Finally, I present an assignment comparing evaluation methods. This assignment allowed me to explore the often overlooked evaluation step.
