Learner Participation Theme
My final assignment in the learner participation theme is also from EAC 551: Research in Adult and Higher Education. I chose the researcher interview assignment. The assignment focused on another researcher conducting studies in a related theme to my research proposal. I interviewed Diane Chapman, professor and Director of Faculty Development at North Carolina State University. Dr. Chapman has extensive experience in the practice of workforce development. With over twenty years of experience in a manufacturing setting and in her current position in faculty development, she shares many of my interests in participation and motivation. Dr. Chapmans research includes but is not limited to: evaluation of training and development, motivation of faculty and engagement in learning.
I approached the interview with some of the same research concerns in my research proposal. First is the debate of mandatory versus voluntary training activities. Dr. Chapman favors a mix but points out that the experience still needs to be positive. Second is learner needs. Training opportunities have to fit the learner in order to increase motivation. Third is the marketing and reputation of training and development. Let learners know about programs and advertise the WIIFM (whats in it for me) and offer positive experiences that fit the learner.
This assignment allowed me to take a deeper dive into the current research on participation. Reviewing current literature allows a view into what is being studied currently. Conducting a research proposal allows me to participate in the body of research. Interviewing the researcher tells the story that is not immediately available in the publications. The interview applies a personal view not otherwise available
