A Case Study: The Ethical Use of MOOCs
EAC 555 Submitted December 8, 2013 Distance and E-Learning Theme |
The final step in the progression of the distance and e-learning theme is the ability to evaluate and reflect using relevant research. This is a progression because the evaluation and reflection demonstrated here applies relevant research. This represents the all-important step of taking the theory and applying it the decisions and actions made in the operation of training and development departments. I chose two assignments to represent the use of research in evaluation and reflection. First is a technology review, using current and relevant research to evaluate e-learning objects. The second is a reflection on the ethical use of Massive Online Open courses.
The technology review is from EAC 585: Integrating Technology into Training and Development. The assignments goal was to evaluate technology training offered by North Carolina State. I took a slightly different approach to the project, instead of evaluating a synchronous session I focused on the DELTA quick training e-learning courses. In my current position we publish OnDemand e-learning sessions that are very similar. My goal with this assignment was to learn a skill to apply to my current position. The research defines these short asynchronous sessions as learning objects. Through a review of relevant research I isolated a tool to evaluate these shorter, single objective and asynchronous e-learning objects. This assignment was integral in making the transfer of ideas in research to my practice in the training and development field.
The case study is from EAC 555: Ethics in the Workplace and Education. The assignment allowed me to identify an ethical issue, and then conduct research to explore many different perspectives of the issue. The issue in the assignment is the ethical use of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). This paper is a departure from the other assignments as it does not focus on technology, instructional design or learning theory. It asks the question, Are MOOC’s an ethical alternative to a traditional college experience? The lesson learned conducting this assignment was more than just how to evaluate an ethical dilemma. It highlights the importance of ethical and moral considerations in the new and changing landscape of e-learning and distance education.
